Between Classical and Quantum Monte Carlo Methods: “Variational” QMC
نویسندگان
چکیده
The variational Monte Carlo method is reviewed here. It is in essence a classical statistical mechanics approach, yet allows the calculation of quantum expectation values. We give an introductory exposition of the theoretical basis of the approach, including sampling methods and acceleration techniques; its connection with trial wavefunctions; and how in practice it is used to obtain high quality quantum expectation values through correlated wavefunctions, correlated sampling, and optimization. A thorough discussion is given of the different methods available for wavefunction optimization. Finally, a small sample of recent works is reviewed, giving results and indicating new techniques employing variational Monte Carlo.

The Coupled Electronic-Ionic Monte Carlo Simulation Method
Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods such as Variational Monte Carlo, Diffusion Monte Carlo or Path Integral Monte Carlo are the most accurate and general methods for computing total electronic energies. We will review methods we have developed to perform QMC for the electrons coupled to a classical Monte Carlo simulation of the ions. In this method, one estimates the Born-Oppenheimer energy E(Z) ...
متن کاملMontePython: Implementing Quantum Monte Carlo using Python
We present a cross-language C++/Python program for simulations of quantum mechanical systems with the use of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. We describe a system for which to apply QMC, the algorithms of variational Monte Carlo and diffusion Monte Carlo and we describe how to implement theses methods in pure C++ and C++/Python. Furthermore we check the efficiency of the implementations in se...

متن کاملMonte Carlo Methods: Application to Hydrogen Gas and Hard Spheres by Mark Douglas Dewing
Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods are among the most accurate for computing ground state properties of quantum systems. The two major types of QMC we use are Vari-ational Monte Carlo (VMC), which evaluates integrals arising from the variational principle , and Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC), which stochastically projects to the ground state from a trial wave function. These methods are applied to ...
متن کاملElectronic quantum Monte Carlo calculations of atomic forces, vibrations, and anharmonicities.
Atomic forces are calculated for first-row monohydrides and carbon monoxide within electronic quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). Accurate and efficient forces are achieved by using an improved method for moving variational parameters in variational QMC. Newton's method with singular value decomposition (SVD) is combined with steepest-descent (SD) updates along directions rejected by the SVD, after init...
